IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Maya Fey
Character journal: [personal profile] optimystic
Series name: Ace Attorney
Canon notes: Coming from the epilogue of Trials and Tribulations

Species: Human

History: Maya was born as the youngest daughter of Misty Fey, master of the Kurain Village and second in line to inheriting the Kurain Family Technique. Women in the Kurain family have always had the ability to commune and channel spirits or the dead. The person who is the Master of the village is the leader, and they have always been a person who holds considerable political and social influence. However, in recent years the Kurain family has fallen into decay. Infighting breaks out constantly between the women of the Kurain clan, all vying for all the benefits that come with being the master. Maya's mother, Misty was a reasonably successful Master of the village, that is until she was called upon to help solve a murder case by interviewing the deceased victim. Misty called the dead spirit, the victim identified his murderer, and all seemed to be resolved. That is, until it was found that the person that the victim identified was innocent. The press got hold of this event and Misty was decried as a fraud. With Kurain's reputation in ruins, Misty left her two daughters behind and they were left with their Aunt Morgan. Misty's jealous younger sister did not have spirit power that could rival Maya or her older sister Mia, but her daughter Pearl was an unprecedented genius... As Morgan began to plot, Mia decided that she would leave her family and move to the city to become a lawyer.

With Mia distant, her mother gone, and her father dead before she could remember him, Maya grew up essentially alone. She took care of, doted upon, and loved her cousin Pearl like a sister, and looked up to her Aunt Morgan like a mother figure. However, Morgan despised Maya in her heart of hearts, and subtly put the girl down whenever she could. Nonetheless, Maya grew into a perky young woman. While it seems like she was home-schooled and generally spent most of her time in the village, she loved television and developed a deep appreciation for pop culture and hamburgers somewhere along the way. However, her life took a sudden turn one day when her sister called her out of the blue. Maya hurried into the city, Mia needed her to hold some evidence for an important trial. However, when she arrived at her sister's law office Mia was already dead and the evidence was stolen. The criminal had written Maya's name on a nearby receipt, and interpreting this as Mia's last word and Maya was arrested for the murder of her own sister. Mia's rookie deference attorney apprentice pulled off a miracle and proved Maya's innocence. Wanting to pay him back for his kindness, Maya remained and started to work for him as his legal assistant. Together the two solved many cases together. As the cases grew more difficult, Maya wished desperately that she was a stronger spirit medium, one that was strong enough to summon her older sister's spirit to help Nick in court.

Deciding that she needed to become stronger, Maya returned to Kurain for a short time until Phoenix was summoned to the village. A man wanted her to perform a channeling request but Maya requested to see Phoenix in return. In the end it's lucky that he's there, it turns out that the entire thing is an elaborate plan put on by Morgan, and Maya is framed for murder. Phoenix clears her name, and Morgan is sent to prison. Pearl stays with Maya and becomes a permanent feature around Wright and Co. in the days to come. With Maya's skills improving every day, and Phoneix making a name for himself as the as the Turnabout Attorney, things were looking up for Wright and Co. However, when the duo is invited to a Steel Samurai press event, Maya is ushered away to answer a phone call. But, as it tragically turns out, Maya is kidnapped by an assassin. Phoneix is hired to defend an actor, Matt Engarde, and is told that Maya will be killed if Matt is not proven innocent. When it is discovered that Matt is indeed the one that hired the assassin and he is really guilty, Maya tells Phoenix that she will not forgive him if he proves Matt innocent. Luckily, Phoenix and Edgeworth are able to pool their resources and ensure Maya's safety. Wright and Co. is reunited and they proceed on to the new year.

The due continue to solve murders and save innocent clients, until one day Maya insists that Phoenix come with her and Pearl into the mountains so that they can complete spirit medium training together. Reluctant, Phoenix comes along. Things seem to be proceeding fine until calamity strikes in the knight. A mysterious story book author is found dead in the main temple, a bridge lights on fire that traps Maya in a remote side temple, and Pearl is no where to be found. Desperate to save Maya, Phoenix tries to run across the flaming bridge, but falls into the water below and suffers a terrible flu. A temporary bridge is constructed, Phoenix recovers... but Maya is no where to be found. It is assumed that she is trapped in a secret prison within the side temple, stuck behind special Fey Family locks. Sister Iris, a mysterious dark haired nun who resembles a murderous figure from Phoenix's past, elects to stay behind and unlock the locks. However, the next day Iris arrives at court and claims that Maya is dead. However, Phoenix unlocks the truth, and discovers that the Iris that they are speaking to is in fact Maya herself, channeling the spirit of Dahlia Hawthorne. Determined to exact revenge against Mia Fey, Dahlia attempted to murder Maya with the help of Morgan Fey from jail. However, Maya was rescued by the mysterious prosecutor Godot, who turns out to be Mia's former lover. After Dahlia's spirit is ejected from Maya, she is forced to take the stand Traumatized and fatigued, she attempts to defend Godot and make it seem that he wasn't the one who murdered the story book writer. But, further events unfold. It is revealed that the murdered woman was Misty Fey, Maya's mother. When she was stabbed she was channeling the spirit of Dahlia, and Godot was forced to stop her by killing her. Iris (the real one) helped to transport the body back to the main temple, and thus Maya's life was saved.

Godot accepts his punishment with grace, Iris is sent to jail, and Maya is shaken and grief stricken for the loss of her mother. However, she puts on a brave face and smiles for Pearl, because her younger cousin realized that her mother was trying to use her to murder her beloved older cousin. The other characters commend her strength, and Maya and Pearl show that they will always be there for each other. Thus the game ends, and it is shown that Maya will likely go on to be a wonderful Master of the Kurain clan, and wants to lead the village to a new future of free of bloodshed.

Now, next up is Maya's Paradisa history. I was going to make it neat and fancy but then it turned out to be longer than I thought. SO HERE IT IS, IN ALL ITS BULLET POINT GLORY!

* Arrives in Paradisa (October 2008)
* Her loss is being able to taste things it's pretty much the worst thing ever.
* Lots of canon mates are there. Nick, Franziska, Pearl, Klavier She doesn't learn about the future, but just spends the beginning. Nick dresses up as the Steel Samurai, and she spends time hanging out. Meets Neku, Pit. People from home filter out, and Pearly stays for a long time. This begins to instill in her the idea that people from home come and go, and she needs to be a strong supporter for her canon mates.
* Apollo arrives around this time, starting of a really strong friendship. Larry and Godot arrive, she overall starts making fun strange canon relationships.
* Bumped to game three a few months later. Its a rough transition but she grows from it. She decides that the reason that she's returned is to become stronger, so strong that no one has to die because of her again. Now she's just searching for what that means. For now, she throws herself into training.
* She learns a bit about future canon and is trying to wrestle with that that means, what happens to Nick, if they're not as close any more?
* Mia arrives for a brief time, Maya freaks out.
* Event horizon happens. Maya realizes how useless she is in combat situations, but also realizes the importance of running and hiding.
* She goes through a loss where she cannot control her channeling, and becomes really scared of channeling in general Shes not sure if it's the castle or if she's just gotten that bad. She doesn't attempt channeling again after that.
* She meets the first Zuko! He's grumpy. She also meets Soi Fong who is also grumpy. This is where Maya realizes her destiny is to meet grumpy people.
* Mia and Pearl leave, but Maya meets Wally West and Kyle Reyner. They meet while they're on a loss, but she becomes really good friends with them and develops a secret crush on Wally. He is crushing on her but she realizes too late and only really develops feelings for him after he's moved on. But these are two of her most important friendships that she remembers, and instills a forever desire to befriend all superheroes she meets. She also gets a fish during Tanabata with Wally and thinks about him. This is where she starts developing a slight type for sweetheart joksters who are protective.
* A lot of drama happens around Wally and Kyle and her group of friends. Maya feels a bit left out, and generally dense. She's realizing she's nearing twenty and feels like she hasn't accomplished very much. She starts training with Wally, and this starts her general working out routine.
* Maya got kidnapped by the Joker (what else is new) and got rescued by angsty Wally. This is where she starts to grow apart from the superheroes (LOADS OF DRAMA, but she loves thoes boys ;A;) but Apollo arrives at Paradisa again and they get even closer. Like seriously, he earns forever bro status.
* I think Zuko left again and then came back. He does that. A lot.
* Maya get hit by a car when the castle turns into California, and she gets her sense of taste back! Hooray! In return she looses memories of Dahlia Hawthorne, an evil redhead woman who tried to kill her one time. All in all, Maya is a huge fan of this trade.
* Phoenix and his mysterious new daughter Trucy arrived in Paradia as Wally and some other friends left. This is a theme that happens a lot in Maya's Paradisa stay-- friends go, friends come, friends go again. This is the first time she's really starting to feel the burn. This is also where she starts coming to grips with the future timeline that awaits her back home. She wonders why Nick got disbarred, and more importantly, why she wasn't around enough to meet Apollo in the future. It's an answer that she never really gets during her stay.
* Around this time is where Maya meets Priscilla from Claymore. And this starts another trend, Maya adopting cute dangerous little girls. And in general, this is the part where Maya becomes completely... unafraid of anything supernatural. She's been in Paradisa long enough at this point, people who are weird or different or powerful are just run of the mill. Not that she was scared of powered people before, but they start to feel less different and intimidating around here.
* Just as Maya comes to accept this, she also starts... well, silly PSAs. Maya really starts to realize that laughter is a gift, and that making people laugh is helping. By making people laugh when times are dire, them thanking her and emphasizing how important her actions are, and her taking their words to heart, her self-esteem and confidence begins to grow.
* Two more important people worth mentioning come in around here. She meets Matt, a really goofy thief and she forms her second baby Paradisa crush! He leaves before anything can happen, but her type is starting to become cemented around this time. She also meets Nea, the being that is possessing Allen. She actually never meets Allen, and never finds out what Nea really is. So he just always remains this cool guy that she kinda knows who never leaves. Yeah, he's awesome.
* Maya also goes through an event where she gains super strength for a day, but she totally makes a mess and Rin gets hurt because of it. It ends up being a really rough thing for Maya, but helps her accept the fact that she's not a fighter, and she should stick to what she knows.
* Natural cycle of Paradisa continues- Phoenix, Apollo, Kyle, Claire, and Priscilla all go home. It both strengthen's Maya's ability to forge forward and meet new people, but every close friend that goes home closes her heart a little.
* As her old friend group dissipates, Maya starts to make new close friends. Sakura, Shiki, Gilbert, Zuko 3.0, Elektra, and Spike. This round she really seems to buddy up with perky girls and quiet brooding guys, and badass ladies that remind her of Mia. She loves her new friends, but this is a transition period for her. This is where Maya really spends a lot of time as a lone canon warrior, and builds up a real sense of independence from her cast.
* Maya is a butt and throws a party for Zuko. This isn't a particularly significant point in her development, but the post made me giggle so there.
* Around here, Maya gets a job at Caritas! She really starts to pick up steam and gets over her last block of sadness. Being a waitress is fun, and she ranks up some months of experience. She spends most of her time having fun, making videos... getting her room lit on fire... decorating a new room... You know, cool kid stuff. People continue to come and go, but Maya holds up through it all. She even manages to get kidnapped, but then Spike helps save her like a badass.
* Nick and Edgeworth come back for the first time in ages, and it's a little rough for the two of them. While Maya is super happy to have him back, Nick feels that she's a little distant.
* This is also where she meets Luna, Glados, and Wheatley. They're all really weird in their own way, but Maya has fun bringing joy to hearts and learning about SCIENCE!!!! And again, that thing happens where a guy kinda crushes on her for a bit but she's too dense to realize it until they've moved on. Yep. Sorry Wheatley. Don't worry, at the end she had kinda a thing for you too. She also meets Xena, to add to the list of badass ladies who are like Mia.
* And then, after four years in Paradisa, Maya finally goes home. She's grown up and matured in a lot of ways-- but at her heart she's still the same spunky, energetic girl that she always was. Now she just has more experiences under her belt, a bit more heartache for friends lost, more confidence that she can be a good friend and maybe someday a leader, and still a huge heart that is always excited to meet new people.

Personality:Maya can be described in one word, strange. She is energetic (maybe too much so), bright, excitable, and a complete kid at heart. She goes about everything she does with boundless enthusiasm, and attempts to get her nose into everyone’s business. She runs purely on instinct, and it’s clear to see that she doesn't really think about her actions before she acts on them. She is easily distracted, jumps to conclusions, and has a tendency to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. For example, if she sees something interesting? She’s not going to think it through, and weight whether or not it belongs to someone, or it might be expensive, she picks it up and starts playing with it. Her grasp on ownership laws are “loose” to say the least, and it’s not uncommon for her to rifle through other’s belongings with the justification of “I was just borrowing it!”

This carelessness can be a blessing, and a curse. It means that she can get herself into trouble, and she tends to stumble into a lot of messes. Because she’s not always careful she sticks her nose where it doesn't belong, and she gets into sticky situations. On the other hand, because she is so inquisitive and willing to explore, she discovers things that no one else could. A great example is in the first game when Phoenix and Maya discover a camera mounted with a microphone. Not thinking of the consequences, Maya made a loud noise to activate the camera, and ended up wasting an entire roll of film. While she incurred the wrath of the person who owned the film and stuck Phoenix with having to pay for her mistakes, the fact that the camera detected loud “bang” noises later became a crucial piece of information.

This excitement is one of her most endearing qualities. She often seems younger than she really is because she goes about everything with such child-like enthusiasm. She looks at everyday things and imagines them as something greater. For example, there's a moment in the game where she and Phoenix see a large heater buried in the snow. She comment that it looks kind of like a giant robot, but Nick quickly points out that it's just a heater. Despite his retort, Maya begins to imagine what it would be like if the heater sprang up from the snow, and jokes with Phoneix that he should fight the heater robot. It's nearly impossible to not get pulled along into her flights of fancy, and she has the ability to point out the cool things in this world that are so easy to miss. Life is fun when you're Maya Fey, and she is determined to share that fun with you (whether you like it or not!).

Despite the fact that she can be careless, Maya has a big heart and cares deeply for those around her. Once you are Maya’s friend, she is fiercely loyal to you, and will give everything that she’s got to help you. When she sees someone in need, she has a hard time turning a blind eye to their pain, and she will throw herself into whatever she needs to do to help them. That does not mean that she is some saint who is kind to everyone. She is quick to pass "judgement" and has been known to call people weird or scary or... well, a whole host of names. But what makes Maya special is that she will stick around long enough to change her opinion. She will tease people (to their face if she know them well, or under her breath to her friends if she just met them) relentlessly for their silly quirks, and then she will turn around and do something really kind for them. That's just the kind of person Maya is.

Strangely, even though Maya will always dive head first into caring about other people she's not always so quick to defend herself. Maya can display certain martyr tendencies, and she often (actually... most of the time) puts the needs of others before her own. This might seem to contradict her childish and silly tendencies-- most of the time in Ace Attorney Phoenix is complaining that he's broke because Maya keeps asking him to buy her food. But Maya is much more perceptive than others give her credit. She's empathetic, and she always wants to make the people that she loves happy. This means that while she is a genuinely silly girl, sometimes she will be silly in an attempt to make other people laugh, or to bring some joy into their life. And, in contrast to that? Maya will do things like put herself in harms way if it means securing evidence that is vital to a case, or she lie to a court of law so that she can protect a criminal who had good intentions. These actions put her in danger, but she doesn't care if she is helping people that she cares about.

And, it's also because Maya has some self-worth issues. Her father died when she was a little girl, and her mother abandoned both Maya and her older sister Mia when she came under fire due to a controversial court case. Maya was then essentially raised by her older sister, and her Aunt Morgan. Morgan was the younger sister of Maya's mother, and she was incredibly jealous of her sister and Maya's status as Master-To-Be. She believed that Maya was foolish, a failure of a spirit medium, and that her daughter Pearl was the rightful heir to the Kurain Family Channeling Technique. This means that Maya grew up raised by a woman who despised her, and this same woman later attempt to orchestrate Maya's murder. While Morgan would outwardly act as if she respected Maya, it is implied that she would subtly put down her niece, and she sewed seeds of self-doubt in Maya that plague her to this day. In the very first game, Maya shows crippling self-doubt issues, and when she is unable to help Nick in any clear way, she goes so far as to wish that she was permanently unconscious. Maya has grown a lot since then, and she has started to believe in herself not only as a spirit medium, but as a person... Still, childhood issues do not vanish overnight, and it is likely that deep down inside, Maya is still very critical of herself. If she cannot contribute to the happiness of her friends? She might start to loose faith in herself.

But she has no reason to, Maya is a truly amazing young woman. She has gone through emotional trauma that would break a weaker person, and yet she's come out stronger than ever. She is fun, excitable, childish yet mature, stubborn, and optimistic to the end. Someday she will grow up to be a fine leader of a village that has been wrecked with political turmoil, but for now she will keep doing her best as a legal assistant who puts her all into helping one person at a time.

Abilities:The only ability that Maya possesses on her own is the Kurain Channeling Technique. To quote the Ace Attorney wiki, “When a Fey performs the Kurain Channeling Technique, her body transforms into a likeness of the person she channels. This change extends to her voice and physical appearance, although her hair and clothes remain the same. From this point, the channeled spirit takes control of the body and the medium loses consciousness and is unaware of anything the spirit does during the channeling. This unconsciousness is complete, unlike regular sleep in which people dream."

One limitation of the technique is that two people may not simultaneously channel the same spirit. However, one medium can "steal" a spirit from a less powerful medium, as well as prevent a less powerful medium from channeling a spirit by channeling it herself. A spirit medium can also only channel spirits if they are sufficiently "trained". It seems that medium training has a lot to do with concentrating and honing one's ability to focus. I the medium has neglected her training, she cannot summon any spirits. Maya runs into this problem in the first game, and she is unable to summon the spirit of her sister. However, by the third game, Maya is able to easily summon her sister's spirit. So, as long as she continues to pursue her training, she should not run into this problem.

Augment Skillset: Engineer
Sample: E-Emergency! Emergency! Maya Fey here, reporting a class A problem! [the video feed comes up, and everyone is treated to a close up view of this young lady's face]

I just got here a few days ago, and I discovered a horrifying fact! Heck, I can't believe this isn't in the welcome manual! Well... you know, the verbal welcome manual. Welcome speech? Yeah, that's more appropriate.

A-Anyway, I found out that there are no hamburgers here! [this is obviously T-R-A-G-I-C stuff that needs to be addressed immediately] I think it's high time that we organize some sort of scavenger hunt, to the farthest stars if we have to! Maybe we can find some space cows, and space lettuce and space buns and tomatoes.... They've gotta be out there! Come on everyone, to Infinity and Father, right? Or at least, I think that's how the phrase goes.

So, who's with me?
